We like to build it from the ground up. We are a very selective A&R department. We may get over one hundred submissions and only 1 or 2 may land. A&R reps here at Flyte Tyme Records have to hear something that has the right sound.

Mix Makers: From an A&R prospective, how would you say the industry is changing?

The opportunities the Independent artists have know a day with the myspace.com they can market themselves they can distribute records themselves, set up an agreement with i-tunes themselves, network with various music artists, music producer, music manager and A&R themselves as well. Artists need to educate themselves on how to market their music. A lot of A&R reps including myself, say that it looks like it will be the Indie way for a while.
Audiences will not go out and buy an album, only hear one song on it that is good and the rest garbage. People are not feeling that so they choose to get it for free by limewire or myspace. A and R reps at major record labels will tell you, there will be a lot of Independent labels rising up in the near future. Already, Sony and BMG merged there will be more merging taking place. EMI is trying to sell off some of its publishing. You could see already the change the industry has gone through. It’s actually a good time for an indie artist to come out.

Mix Makers: With all the independent artists out these days what advice would you give a music artist on getting signed? Musicians should always know that this is a business, familiarize yourself with songwriting, understanding copywriting and licensing. Any A&R will tell you that yes it is a business and it should be taken seriously.

Mix Makers: How do you feel about digital downloads and artists selling there own music without record labels?

Now that Independent artists are selling and promoting themselves, record labels are starting to notice the amount of money being made on the independent level and are now interested in helping out. Instead of just throwing a bunch of money at a band by promoting them and having them sell a heap of Cd’s, record labels are looking to invest in tour support, recording sessions, money advances and music distribution. Record labels just don’t have that kind of money to spend anymore.
