Record Labels are usually managed under a corporations umbrella known as a "music group" A music group is most likely owned by a conglomerate or "holding company" some of these corporations are made up of music publishing companies, recording studios, CD manufacturing companies, music distributors and record labels. As of 2007 the "Big Four" music groups manage 80% of the United States music market. Usually record labels, manufacturers, music distributors and publishing companies will make up a record group which is ultimately managed by a large music group, the record label under a music group are usually known as being divisions of the music group, this is getting a little complicating so I'm going to move on to something more interesting about record labels. Record Labels, music distributors and music publishing companies that are not managed by the Big Three are known as independent record labels even though they might be large corporations with many departments. The word independent or "indie" can also refer to independent record labels that stick to making non corporate independent music regardless of the corporate structure of the record label; non commercial music is considered independent music these days. What is a sub-label? I will make this a short definition! I guess it means a record label under a record label or whatever. Let's move on to something more interesting. What is are Vanity Record Label? A vanity record label is one that gives the idea that an artist is the CEO and manages the record labels every day activities because of the lucrative artists record label relationship. Definition! I guess it means a record label under a record label or whatever. Let's move on to something more interesting. Record Labels!

Record Labels are a brand or trademark related with the marketing and promotion of recorded music and music videos. Record Labels! Usually record labels are also a publishing company that has trademarks and brands, that handles, recording, production, manufacturing, distribution, promotion, marketing and the enforcement of copyright law for music recordings and music videos: the A&R position at record labels is responsible for talent scouting and development of newly signed artists or bands. The term record labels is derived from the round labels in the middle of a vinyl record which usually contains the record labels name along with manufacturers information.

Almost All Successful Artists and Bands Rely On Record Labels

These days in the music industry, almost all successful artists and bands rely on record labels to market, promote and expand their fan base, record labels will distribute your album via mp3, television  and radio. Record labels hire publicists to help performers with media that comes along with being a famous artist or band member, record labels also hire publicists to market an artists merchandise and make it obtainable in music stores and multi media outlets. Record labels also use the internet as a great way for some artists and bands to avoid the high cost of marketing and distribution to gain access to new audiences, record labels also promote music videos online via youtube.com and other comparable websites. Get connected with hundreds of independent record labels; including record label A&R & major record labels.

Record labels come in all shapes and sizes, they may be small, local and  independent or record labels may be under the umbrella of a large international media group like Universal Music Group, some record labels will find their company in between and indie and a major record label. As of 2012 there are only three major record labels, I though there were five record labels that could consider themselves major but I guess not anymore. "Sublabels" are record labels that fall under a larger record labels umbrella but does business under a different name or brand. My cousin Bill owns a large independent record label called Side One Dummy Records, I had the opportunity to work there as an online music marketing consultant from 2005-2008, during that time I learned how successful independent record labels function and a lot about marketing independent music for an independent record labels. Record Labels! Most independent record labels rely on their bands to tour the world to expand their fan base and sell song downloads online and CD's in record stores, these days shopping places like Best Buy which used to be called "rack robbers" are were most CD sales take place. Record Labels! Most bands tour the world and rely mostly on merchandise sales at their shows and concerts because they make very little from actual CD and song download sales. Record Labels!

Record labels that are strictly a brand or trademark, not a company are usually called an imprint, record label imprints are marketed as a part or a division of the record label which functions without legal business structure but is connected with a record label or music media group. Record Labels!
